Summary
After Tad leaves, the narrator is alone in her mother's apartment. She sits on the floor with Tad's beer, watching the sky darken through the immense windows. She tries to convince herself she's fine, but the apartment feels oppressive—filled with sharp-edged furniture and a wall of cracked mirrors that she doesn't remember being there before. Angelica, the cat, has disappeared. A clock ticks insistently, urging her to move.
She unpacks the box Sylvia gave her from the shop basement. Inside, she finds a collection of old dolls that all look alike, with pale skin and glassy blue eyes, resembling her mother.
