Chapter 9: Sam — Summary and Analysis

Summary

The chapter opens with Sam seated in a theater, watching an elaborate performance of illusions—a suspended actor vanishes into a ribbon of crimson silk, and a mock sword battle erupts onstage. But Sam's attention is elsewhere. She has spotted Diamond Taylor, the woman she has been searching for online for years, seated near the stage. Sam's palms sweat as she realizes that something from the restaurant conversation she overheard as a child has finally materialized in her life.

When Diamond rises to leave mid-show, Sam notices a small gold glint on her lapel—a pin shaped like a golden fox, identical to the ones worn by the men in the restaurant years ago. Diamond's entourage, all wearing similar gold pins, rises in unison and follows her out. Sam, driven by a deep curiosity, hurries after them.

She follows the group through a narrow hallway to an unremarkable back exit and into a shadowed alley alongside the theater. Wedging herself into a small turn in the wall, she hides and watches. From her concealed position, she overhears a conversation among Diamond's associates about corporate rivals: Lumines has bought up more of Fantec's time, there is talk of diluting the price of sand, and speculation about a government attempt to ban sand—a law that has failed for a decade because congressmen are themselves customers. Diamond mentions sending Jabir, then dismisses Hades as too eager. Sam also notices a silhouette on the roof—more of Diamond's people watching from above.
