Summary
The chapter opens with Ike in the hospital waiting room, having just bought a soda from a vending machine. Mya has come out of surgery but remains unconscious; the doctor tells Ike she could wake in a few hours or a few weeks. Ike is overwhelmed by the practical burdens of his ruined life—calling the insurance company, getting a police report, and facing the charred remains of his home. His phone rings repeatedly, and he finally answers Buddy Lee's call, threatening to kill him if he calls again.
Buddy Lee reveals that Gerald Culpepper, Derek's stepfather and a judge, was Tangerine's lover and the mastermind behind the attacks. Gerald used the Rare Breed motorcycle club to carry out the violence, and he now wants Tangerine delivered to him in exchange for Arianna's safe return.
