Summary
Chapter 21 opens with Darcy and Brougham returning from a grocery run to Brougham's house, where they plan to host a reconciliation dinner for Ray and Brooke. Brougham's mother is away in Las Vegas for a bachelorette party, and his father is home alone. Darcy immediately asserts her standards of hygiene when Brougham sits on the kitchen counter, and he complies after a brief protest.
Brougham types up the menu—garlic-butter oysters in puff pastry, roast figs with potatoes and asparagus in chili-lime sauce, and chocolate-covered strawberries—while Darcy prepares the ingredients. When Brougham calls for his father, Darcy meets Mr. Brougham for the first time. She notices how little he resembles his son, and wonders whether that physical difference has been a source of tension in the family, given the earlier arguments over Mrs. Brougham's fidelity. Mr. Brougham approves the use of the duck in the fridge, with the condition that he gets some for dinner.
The two teens cook together, and Darcy teaches Brougham how to use a kitchen thermometer—a skill he finds genuinely fascinating. They split tasks: Brougham handles printing menus and setting up the projector, while Darcy decorates the patio with string lights, a candle, and hidden extension cords. The backyard is already an attractive space with stone flooring, potted plants, and a pool, so the additions complete a romantic atmosphere.
Ray arrives first, dressed in leather pants, a turquoise shirt, and white heels. She's fully invested in the plan to win Brooke back, though she's blocked Darcy on all platforms—Brougham had to be the one to message her. Darcy reveals that Brooke doesn't know about the surprise; she thinks she's attending a birthday gathering. Ray worries Brooke will leave, but Darcy reassures her.
Brooke arrives with Ainsley, looking exasperated and bewildered. She gives Darcy a gift of about two dozen skincare and makeup samples, noting that Darcy probably can't afford to replace her stash after losing the locker and getting suspended. Ainsley leaves after a brief exchange, and Brougham and Darcy guide Brooke outside to meet Ray.
While Ray and Brooke talk at the table, Brougham and Darcy serve the appetizers. Brooke immediately recognizes the menu items as aphrodisiacs and laughs, teasing Darcy about trying to make them
