Summary
The chapter opens at sunset as Juliette and Benedikt move quickly through the streets of Zhabei, where crowds are already gathering for the public execution. They carry a single dose of vaccine from Lourens—enough to protect only one person. As they walk, Benedikt voices his concern about what will happen if Dimitri releases the insect monsters in such close proximity, and Juliette reveals she has been formulating a plan.
They stop at an abandoned fire station, where they find a hose, jugs of gasoline, and a firefighting car. Juliette insists Benedikt drive, even though he protests that he cannot. Her plan is to offer herself in trade for Marshall and Alisa, betting that Dimitri will find the death of both gangster heirs too tempting to refuse. Benedikt will stay behind, positioned on a rooftop with the hose, ready to shower the street with gasoline and activate the monsters.
Juliette approaches the crowd unarmed, having deliberately shed her coat so she will be recognized in her bright, beaded dress. She declares herself weaponless and offers her life in exchange for Marshall and Alisa. Dimitri is skeptical but intrigued by the prospect of killing both heirs of Shanghai's underworld. To convince him—and Roma—Juliette recites her marriage vow, declaring she will not be parted from Roma even by death. She steps forward and kisses Roma, passing the vaccine from under her tongue into his mouth, whispering for him to bite down.
Dimitri accepts the trade. Marshall and Alisa are released, and Juliette is tied to the pole in Roma's place. Marshall protests violently but is persuaded to leave with Alisa. As Dimitri prepares to execute Juliette, he reveals bags of vaccine at his feet, presenting them as a gift to those loyal to him—a mirror of the Larkspur's strategy of destruction and salvation in one hand.
Benedikt releases the gasoline from the rooftop, drenching the crowd and the street. Five monsters burst into being, and chaos erupts. Dimitri orders the insects released, but Roma—now protected by the vaccine—is immune. The crowd and workers fall victim to the insects, gouging at their own throats. Only Dimitri, Roma, and Juliette remain standing.
Juliette and Roma face a choice: flee while they can, or fight. They decide together that they cannot walk away while Dimitri lives and the monsters remain under his control. Roma lunges at Dimitri to distract him while Juliette tears open the vaccine bags, scattering the contents across the gasoline-soaked ground. Dimitri kicks Juliette, but the scene is set. As the monsters lumber closer, Juliette and Roma exchange vows—
