Chapter 42: Epilogue — How the Story Concludes

⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This guide contains detailed spoilers for the entire novel. Proceed only if you've finished reading or are comfortable knowing the plot.

Summary

The epilogue opens at dawn on the morning after the destruction of Cairndale Manor. Charlie, the only survivor besides Miss Davenshaw, finds her buried under a collapsed beam in the ruins. He carries her to a ridge above the loch, where he covers her with a singed blanket and begs her not to die. Below, the manor is a smoldering shell; the island where the orsine stood has collapsed into the water. Charlie knows Marlowe is lost—he descended into the orsine and sealed it shut, and the explosion followed. Charlie searches the rubble for any other survivors—Alice, Komako, Ribs, Oskar—but finds no one. He retrieves Mrs. Harrogate's body from a rowboat and wheels it up the ridge, unwilling to leave her behind.

When Miss Davenshaw wakes, Charlie discovers that the cut on his hand is not healing. He realizes Berghast, with his burning grip at the edge of the orsine, ripped Charlie's talent out of him, leaving him ordinary. He wraps his wounds and tells Miss Davenshaw, who offers only a murmured comfort. They decide to leave before authorities arrive. They take supplies and money from the ruins, leave Mrs. Harrogate's body in the courtyard, and walk away as riders approach. They catch a wagon to Edinburgh, then a train to London, where they break into Mrs. Harrogate's old lodgings on Nickel Street West.

Over the following weeks, Charlie and Miss Davenshaw read Dr. Berghast's charred journal. It contains records of experiments, a list of three child talents from the glyphic, and a passage about a woman named Addie and a community built of bones. Berghast writes that a door, once opened, will be opened again—implying the existence of a second orsine. Charlie becomes convinced that Marlowe is not dead but trapped inside the orsine, and he tells Miss Davenshaw of his feeling. She holds him but says nothing.

One day, Alice Quicke, Komako, Oskar, and Ribs arrive at the lodgings, having survived the island's collapse. They share their story: they killed Jacob Marber, Lymenion fell, and the keywrasse saved them. Fifteen people escaped, and the others are with Susan Crowley. Charlie tells them about Marlowe's sacrifice and shows them the scar on his hand where his talent was taken. Miss Davenshaw reveals the second orsine's existence. Charlie declares he will find it to rescue Marlowe. After a moment, Alice agrees to join him.
