Summary

By Easter, Mrs. Caruthers has recovered enough to need fewer of the doctor's tinctures and to spend longer stretches awake. Her afternoon naps grow shorter, which means Ophie must stay close and wait on her more often. The old woman is also more reserved than before, as if embarrassed that Ophie witnessed her vulnerability during her illness.

Ophie has grown used to her afternoons of freedom—exploring the house and visiting Clara in the attic. Ophie instinctively reaches for her salt bundle and iron nail. She knows violet spirits are dangerous; she has seen them scream at the living and even knock a man into the street. Yet she also reflects that Clara has every right to be angry—her life was cut short, and everyone believes she simply ran off. No one even knows she was murdered.

Clara brightens again and urges Ophie to continue the investigation, joking about getting gin—
