Summary

Summer has arrived in the Scottish Highlands, and the wolves have fully claimed their new home. Each pack howls day and night, running circuits of their territories to mark boundaries that will be passed down for generations. Inti tracks their movements daily, collecting data from scat and kill sites, sometimes by plane with Fergus, sometimes on horseback, and occasionally alone.

Ash's Abernethy Pack pups are now about three months old, their eyes shifted to pale amber and their coats thickening. The white runt, Number Twenty—the pup Inti held at birth—remains the smallest but has proven the boldest hunter, catching more than double what her siblings have managed. Inti suspects she may one day lead the pack.

The Tanar Pack, to the east, has staked out the largest territory. Its three yearlings have reached full size and sexual maturity, and the pack of five hunts together with remarkable harmony. In a surprising turn, the previously timid Number Thirteen—who stayed behind in her pen because she seemed too afraid to leave—was not afraid at all. Yearling Number Twelve moved within her pen and mated with her instead of attacking.

Meanwhile, the Glenshee Pack has drawn Inti's curiosity. She lies on a distant hill, binoculars raised, watching the five wolves congregate on the southern side of a mountain near a river. She suspects they are denning, and her suspicion is confirmed when she spots Number Eight, the breeding female, digging a den. Inti's relief is overwhelming.

But then her radio picks up a signal much closer than the Glenshee wolves. She realizes with a jolt that it must be Number Ten—the fierce wolf who ran free in the first days and never returned. Inti walks back to her car with deliberate, loud steps, trying not to act like prey, knowing the wolf is watching her. She loves every terrifying second of it.

Back at base, the data confirms it: Number Ten has returned after covering thousands of kilometers, returning in time to protect her sister and the pack as they prepare for the impending litter. Niels joins Inti on the cabin steps with tea, and the two reconcile. He apologizes for calling her timid and for going against her judgment about Number Six's den. He shares stories from his childhood in Norway, where his family kept a small pack of wolves in a wildlife park—wolves that were fascinated with visitors, showing no fear but mutual curiosity. He tells her he believes animals are more inherently loyal than humans, and that connections are built deep within instinct. His words stir Inti's protective certainty.

Two months have passed since Stuart's disappearance, but the rumors haven't faded. Inti's pregnancy progresses—Aggie signs that the baby is now the size of a cherry, then a plum—but Inti doesn't act on her initial decision. She can't afford to think about it.

Instead, she thinks about Duncan. For several nights, she follows him after he leaves the police station. She watches him check on old Mrs. Doyle, who has arthritis but refuses to give up work; he has tea with her and does chores. He brings bread, milk, and meat to a woman raising five kids alone, kicking a soccer ball with her boys. He drinks beer with Fergus in the garden. Inti realizes he cares deeply—it's the fabric of his life. But nobody is only one thing.

One night, Duncan doesn't turn down his driveway. He pulls over and heads into the woods on foot. Inti follows, and when she steps into his path, he startles. She asks him directly: did you kill Stuart? He doesn't answer. He notices her nose is bleeding. She tells him the death is being blamed on the wolves, and if they come to harm, she will make sure he pays for it. He replies that he thinks he's already paying for it.

When Inti gets home, she finds Aggie hunched on the kitchen floor with a knife, terrified, signing that
