Full Summary
Oathbringer opens with Dalinar Kholin, now a Bondsmith, trying to build a coalition against the Everstorm. Highprince Sadeas is murdered, and his copycat killer—a spren of Odium named Re-Shephir—terrorizes Urithiru. Shallan confronts the Midnight Mother, driving it from the tower. Meanwhile, Kaladin returns to Hearthstone after the Everstorm, fights Roshone, and discovers the parshmen have transformed into Voidbringers. He escorts a group of parshmen who are fleeing slavery, struggling with the realization they are not mindless monsters.
Dalinar, using Stormfather visions, convinces Queen Fen of Thaylenah and Emperor Yanagawn of Azir to join his coalition, though many nations remain hesitant. Flashbacks reveal Dalinar’s brutal youth, his marriage to Evi, and the Thrill-fueled slaughter at the Rift. He burned Rathalas, killing Evi, and has been hiding from the memory through the Old Magic. Jasnah Kholin returns from Shadesmar with knowledge of the Recreance and the fact that the Heralds abandoned Talenelat to 4,500 years of torture.
Shallan, Adolin, Kaladin, and Elhokar head to besieged Kholinar. Shallan infiltrates the Cult of Moments under the influence of the Unmade Ashertmarn, and Kaladin freezes in battle when forced to fight the parshmen he had traveled with. Moash kills Elhokar, and the team escapes through the Oathgate into Shadesmar, where they journey across a sea of glass beads, face Fused, and learn that the honorspren have a bounty on Syl.
Venli, the last listener, secretly bonds the spren Timbre and begins to question Odium’s narrative. Dalinar’s coalition breaks apart when the ancient Eila Stele is translated: humans are the original Voidbringers, refugees who destroyed their own world and brought Odium to Roshar. At Thaylen City, Amaram’s army is corrupted by the Thrill, and Odium tries to claim Dalinar as his champion by forcing him to relive the Rift massacre. Dalinar denies Odium his pain, declaring “You cannot have my pain. I am Unity.” This creates Honor’s Perpendicularity, flooding allies with Stormlight. The Thrill is captured in the King’s Drop ruby, Amaram is killed by Rock, Teft swears his Third Ideal, and Szeth swears to follow Dalinar. In the aftermath, Jezrien is murdered with a golden knife, Taravangian bargains with Odium, and Jasnah becomes queen of Alethkar. Dalinar begins writing his memoir Oathbringer, determined to take the next step.

Themes
- Redemption and Self-Forgiveness – Dalinar, Shallan, and Kaladin each face unforgivable pasts and must accept pain without letting it define them.
- Unity versus Division – Dalinar’s coalition mirrors the splintering of Urithiru’s politics, while Odium unites the singers through hate.
- The Weight of a Leader’s Soul – The moral costs of leadership play out in Dalinar’s massacre at the Rift and Taravangian’s Diagram.
- The Reinterpreted Past – Dawnchant translations name humans as Voidbringers, reshaping the conflict into a war of stolen land.
- Identity and Self-Deception – Shallan’s personas, Dalinar’s suppressed memories, and Moash’s transformation into Vyre explore the masks people wear to survive trauma.
Symbols
- Oathbringer – The Shardblade Dalinar once used to kill his wife, now the title of his confessional memoir that represents owning his shame.
- The Thrill (Nergaoul) – A primal Unmade that drives soldiers into ecstatic violence; Dalinar captures it, renouncing the bloodlust that defined him.
- The Most Important Step – Nohadon’s question, answered by “the next one,” becomes a mantra of incremental progress through failure.
- Shallan’s Sketchbook and Personas – Her detailed drawings both heal and divide her, literalizing the idea that perception shapes reality.
Ending Overview
At Thaylen City, Dalinar defies Odium’s attempt to make him his own champion. He accepts the full weight of his atrocities and proclaims, “You cannot have my pain.” This act opens Honor’s Perpendicularity, flooding the battlefield with Stormlight. Kaladin and the Radiants fight back; the Thrill is trapped in the King’s Drop; Amaram falls to Rock’s Shardbow; and Szeth swears allegiance to Dalinar. Later, Moash kills the Herald Jezrien with a knife that destroys his soul, Taravangian bargains away most of Roshar, and Jasnah rises to the Alethi throne. The novel ends with Dalinar writing his memoir Oathbringer, committed to the next step. For a full breakdown, see the ending explained article.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important step a man can take?
The next step. Dalinar answers Nohadon’s cryptic question in a vision, and it becomes a mantra that he, Shallan, and other characters embrace to move forward despite failure and pain.
Why did the Radiants abandon their Shards during the Recreance?
They discovered that humans were the original Voidbringers who destroyed their homeworld with Surgebinding. Rather than risk another apocalypse, they chose to break their oaths.
Who killed Sadeas, and why is there a copycat?
Adolin killed Sadeas in a rage. Later, the Unmade Re-Shephir mimicked the murder style, creating a copycat spree that forced Adolin to investigate while hiding his own guilt.
What happened to Dalinar’s wife, Evi?
Dalinar burned the Rift, Rathalas, using oil. Evi had secretly entered the city to plead for surrender, and she died in the fire. Dalinar then suppressed the memory via the Old Magic until it returned.
What is the Thrill (Nergaoul)?
The Thrill is an Unmade that drives soldiers into ecstatic violence. Odium used it to corrupt Amaram’s army. Dalinar ultimately captures it in a perfect ruby.
What does the Eila Stele reveal?
The Dawnchant stele written by the Dawnsingers reveals that humans are not native to Roshar; they invaded, brought Odium, and destroyed their original world. This labels humans as the true Voidbringers.
What is Honor’s Perpendicularity?
Dalinar’s Bondsmith power unites the three Realms, creating a perpendicularity that pours Stormlight directly from the Spiritual Realm. He summons it by declaring “I am Unity” while refusing Odium’s demand for his pain.
Does Venli bond a spren?
Yes. The spren Timbre secretly bonds Venli, restoring her ability to hear the old rhythms. She eventually speaks the First Ideal, becoming the first singer Radiant in millennia.
