Summary
1990. Saffy Singh, then a teenager, lives in a trailer with Travis, a drug user. She hears about the disappearance of Izzy Sanchez, a sixteen-year-old last seen waiting for a ride outside a party. Weeks later, Angela Meyer vanishes after her shift at a diner. Then Lila Maroney—a girl Saffy knew from Miss Gemma's group home—goes missing after stepping outside a punk show. Saffy, who has no diploma and few friends, is devastated. She drives to the Plattsburgh police station and offers to help. There she meets Sergeant Emilia Moretti, who listens to Saffy's stories about Lila and gives her a business card. Saffy volunteers for the citizen search effort and discovers police work—the brisk instructions, the lack of sentimentality, the stern tenderness of Moretti's gaze.
1999. Saffy, now twenty-seven and three weeks into her promotion to investigator with the New York State Police, stands over a crime scene in the Adirondack woods. A hiker has found the remains of three girls buried by a stream. Saffy recognizes a red nylon backpack with a hand-sewn denim patch—it belonged to Lila. Moretti confirms the bones are the missing girls from 1990.
