Chapter 21 Summary, Themes, and Analysis

Summary

The chapter opens in the throne room moments after the false godmother's reveal. Agnes, no longer the fluttery chicken-keeper Marra knew, stands transformed—tall, with eyes flashing green like a beast's in firelight. She announces that the Northern Kingdom's godmother has died at last, breaking the old curse, and she delivers a new gift to the infant prince: he shall grow up fatherless, and healthy. The second half of the blessing, spoken in her familiar, ordinary voice, undercuts the terror of the first.

Vorling, stunned by the news of the godmother's death, recovers and shouts for Agnes to be stopped. Guards rush her with swords drawn. Agnes flees, reverting to her small, round, ordinary appearance as she runs. Two guards with halberds block the doorway, and Marra fears Agnes will be cut down.

Bonedog intervenes, attacking the guards from behind. He takes down one guard by tearing into his thigh, then snaps at the second, allowing Agnes to escape into the hallway. Vorling orders his remaining guards to kill the familiar. Four men converge on Bonedog, and though he fights—closing his jaws on a man's knee—a halberd comes down, and the ghost dog's bones explode across the floor, no longer held together by wire. Marra moans in grief, but the courtiers are too distracted by the chaos to notice.

While everyone's attention is fixed on Agnes and Bonedog, Fenris has been working his way along the wall. He reaches Vorling, places a hand on the king's shoulder in a gesture that looks almost friendly, and drives his sword through the king's chest. Vorling stares down at the blade in puzzlement, then dies as Fenris withdraws the sword. Marra whispers that Fenris did it—the thing they came to do—but she would trade the victory in a heartbeat to have Bonedog whole again.

The guards abandon their pursuit of Agnes and surround Fenris. He has no armor, only his iron sword. Marra sees on his face the moment he decides to die. But before the guards can strike, Kania shouts,
