Summary

After the events at Max Shandler's property, April and Eddie are taken to the Coldlake police station for questioning. The detectives split them up: Detective Beam interrogates April while Detective Quentin takes Eddie. April is exhausted, hungry, and fixated on the pack of cigarettes Beam leaves on the table—a detail that triggers memories of her mother smoking during a frantic escape from California and of her own first cigarette at thirteen.
