Chapter 9 opens with Mickey and Nasha inside the creeper chamber, face-to-face with the creature they call Speaker. Speaker speaks in Mickey's voice because it has been monitoring his comms with Berto for two years, using that data to build a language model. Mickey realizes Speaker is the same creeper he saw on the hill two days earlier.
