Full Summary
Leather & Lark opens one year before the main events, when Lark Montague drowns a predator named Jamie Merrick in Scituate Reservoir. After a car crash, she calls her stepdad who arranges for cleaners from the Leviathan organization. The cleaners, Conor and a hostile partner Lark calls Budget Batman, retrieve the body. The partner forces Lark into his trunk, but she escapes using a guitar whammy bar. That partner is Lachlan Kane.
One year later, Lachlan is forced to participate in the torture of drug dealer Robbie Usher under his boss Leander Mayes. Lachlan wants to retire but is denied because of his mishandling of a contract involving Damian Covaci – the same night he put Lark in the trunk. Lachlan kills Robbie to end his suffering and accepts he may never escape Leander’s control.
At a gathering at his brother Rowan’s apartment, Lachlan meets Lark again. They share a flirtatious kiss on the balcony, but Lark recognizes his voice from their earlier encounter. An argument erupts and Lark leaves, declaring the "duchess has met the guillotine." Meanwhile, the Phantom – a stalker seeking revenge for his brother’s death – breaks into Lark’s apartment and plans to make her destruction appear to be Lachlan’s fault.
Lark visits her great aunt Ethel and overhears a family meeting discussing eliminating the Kanes, including Rowan, who is engaged to Lark’s best friend Sloane. Ethel orchestrates the overhearing and sets up a marriage-of-convenience scheme. At Rowan and Sloane’s wedding, Lark sings, intensifying the tension with Lachlan. During a forced dance, Lark proposes they marry to protect both their families. She offers to help secure his freedom from Leander in exchange for help solving the murders.
After completing her latest vigilante project – encasing a predator in epoxy resin – Lark marries Lachlan at Boston City Hall. Ethel gives Lark a vintage diamond ring. The couple begins to navigate their fake marriage while investigating the murders. Lachlan discovers Lark’s hidden box of trophies behind a Constantine poster, including a severed finger and human-skin maracas. Lark admits she has killed ten people to protect her loved ones.
Their relationship grows more intimate as they confront family members and uncover clues. Lachlan gives Lark a custom leather harness with gold stars representing their shared memories. During a concert, Lark sings “Ruinous Love” and signals Lachlan to open a sealed box containing a remote for a wearable vibrator. He uses it during her cello solo, leading to a public orgasm and a private, intense encounter where they reaffirm safe words.
The investigation leads them to Dr. Louis Campbell, who covered up abuse at the boarding school Lark attended. Lark sews his lips shut and shoots him. They later break into the medical examiner’s office to sever Stan Tremblay’s fingers and enucleate his eye for biometrics, narrowing the killer’s identity.
The Phantom, posing as a nurse, kills Ethel in the hospital. He injects her with a lethal dose of lorazepam while she defies him. Lark receives the news and she and Lachlan exchange “I love you” for the first time. Later, the Phantom (under the alias Abe Midus) breaks into Lark’s apartment, drugs her, and kidnaps her. Lachlan finds Bentley wounded and Lark missing. With help from Rose and Conor, they trace the Phantom to Portsmouth.
Lark wakes imprisoned in a rotary oven. The Phantom forces Lachlan to choose between saving Lark or his brother Rowan. Lark tells Lachlan to save Rowan. Lachlan shatters the oven window with help from Rose and rescues Lark. The Phantom is killed. Lachlan and Lark reaffirm their bond, with Lachlan declaring Lark his person.
After the rescue, Lachlan retires from Leviathan after Lark signs the Covaci contract. At home, he reveals a safe behind the Constantine poster containing Lark’s trophies and the preserved heart of Dr. Campbell, giving her closure. He then proposes with divorce papers and a ring. Lark tears up the papers, declares her love, and accepts.
In the epilogue, Rose Silveria reflects on belief and magic as she stands over the Phantom’s body. She realizes she has been shot and accepts death with peace, seeing Fionn as her home. A bonus chapter, “Strapped,” shows Lark and Lachlan engaged in a power-exchange scene using the divorce papers as a prop, symbolizing reclamation and trust.
