Summary

The chapter opens with Marlinchen waking after a violent storm. She finds her pillow damp and her hair wet, though she cannot explain why, and recalls a vague dream of standing outside in the rain on cobblestones. She checks the garden and is relieved to see the juniper tree still standing, its black berries gleaming. She also notices Indrik and the goblin emerging from the shed, both looking despondent.

Marlinchen prepares breakfast for her father from an unusually well-stocked icebox, filled with fatback, sour cream, carp, apples, and even a container of varenyky filling she doesn't remember making. She serves Papa his meal, and he warns her that she and her sisters should eat sparingly, claiming women need less food. As she watches him eat, Marlinchen's thoughts drift to Sevas and the possibility of sneaking out again.
