Courtney drives back to the cottage, mentally piecing together the disappearance of Kylie Matthews five years earlier. Kylie was eleven, almost twelve, and that summer she had her first crush. Courtney fixates on the seven-year age gap—the same one between her and Elliott when they met—and suspects Daniel Clarke, then nineteen, may have been Kylie’s crush and potential abductor.

She arrives home without groceries. Elliott flings open the door, alarmed by her two-hour absence. When he finds no bags in the car, his confusion turns to anger. Courtney confesses she never intended to go to the store; instead, she visited Sam and Joanna Matthews, the parents of the missing Kylie, and also drove to Daniel Clarke’s house based on the address she found online. Elliott is furious and frightened, calling her actions stupid and reckless.

The confrontation shifts. Elliott pulls her close, insisting they are on the same side and must tell each other everything. Courtney’s doubts resurface: the blood on his shoes, the night Emily wanted to speak to him privately, his hesitation then. She asks what he’s been keeping from her. His story about the blood changes—earlier he said it came from bleeding a fish; now he claims he probably cut himself with fishing line. Undeterred, Courtney reveals what Detective Evans told her: there was no Benadryl in the cottage. Wyatt lied about taking it. That means he would have been awake during the attack, possibly hearing or seeing Nolan’s murder. As Elliott absorbs this, Wyatt appears in the doorway with Mae, asking if they are talking about him.
