Prologue: A Wake and a Divorce
In July 1997, Michelle attends her mother Birdie Cadell's wake. She intends to tell her family about her divorce but delays. Her ex-husband Allen pressures her to announce it that day because he has a flight. When he does, an argument erupts: Allen criticizes Michelle, she slaps him, and he tells her she deserves to be alone. She runs out of the chapel.
Arrival in Copper Run
In September 1997, Michelle arrives by taxi in Copper Run, Vermont, with her border collie Rocket. Her mother left the inn to her sister Sara, who is finishing art school, and their father is unable to run it, so Michelle is managing the Bird & Breakfast until December on leave from her advertising job. She meets Cliff Burke, a single father and baker, when his six-year-old daughter Brittany is petting Rocket through the fence.
