Summary

The chapter opens with Fox standing in the shadows across from Cross and Daughters, wrestling with his decision to end his relationship with Hannah. He has spent five lonely nights on the Della Ray, and the crew's doubts about his character—voiced by Sanders and Deke—have convinced him he isn't good enough for her. He believes that if his own crew thinks so little of him, the whole town and Hannah's family will too. He resolves to break things off, but his resolve weakens the moment he sees Hannah through the bar window, laughing.

Fox enters the bar and finds Hannah talking with Christian, the film's lead actor. Hannah introduces them, and Christian teases Fox about being the one taking her away. Hannah quickly clarifies that she has quit her job at the production company—a decision she made for herself—and that her songs will be used in the film. Fox is genuinely thrilled for her, and the two share a moment of pride and connection. Christian, sensing the tension, excuses himself to mock the interns.

Alone, Hannah immediately asks Fox if he's going to break up with her. Fox, uncomfortable with the phrase, proposes they mutually agree to change their relationship status so they can remain friends. Hannah accepts, but not without a request: she wants a goodbye kiss for closure. Fox, torn between his resolve and his overwhelming desire, agrees. As he leans in, Piper rings the bell for last call, interrupting the moment. Hannah shrugs it off, then mentions she needs to grab her bag from Fox's apartment because her bus leaves at seven in the morning. She breezes past him, and Fox, helpless, follows.
