Chapter 6: Julia – Summary and Analysis

Summary

Julia and William’s lakeside honeymoon is marred by harsh winds and William’s lingering knee injury, forcing an awkward rhythm of Julia walking ahead and circling back. Back in Chicago, their sunny Northwestern married-housing apartment delights Julia, who savors the novelty of her own kitchen and grocery trips free from her mother’s rules. William’s surgeon declares his healing excellent and orders him to walk daily, handing Julia the charge of enforcement.

Three days after the wedding, Julia returns from shopping to find her sisters at her door. Cecelia reveals she is five months pregnant, will keep the baby, and will not name the father. Rose has banished Cecelia from the family home and instructed Julia not to come to dinner. Julia feels usurped—she was supposed to have the first grandchild—and desperately starts crafting a plan to restore order. That evening she tells William they should have a baby immediately, so her celebrated pregnancy will sit alongside Cecelia’s, knitting the family back together.

The next day Julia visits Rose in her garden. Rose, hollowed by grief and fury, says she asked only one thing of her daughters: not to repeat her own unmarried pregnancy. Julia sees that her mother is both inflicting and suffering the same rupture Rose endured when her own mother cut her off. Julia leaves steeled to fix everything.

In late October, Cecelia goes into labor and asks for Julia in the delivery room. Together they endure the contractions, and Isabella Rose Padavano—Izzy—arrives, pink and furious. Later that night, Charlie appears at the hospital, wordlessly forgives Cecelia, and cradles his granddaughter. He whispers a line of Whitman into her ear, then collapses in the hallway and dies. His heart has stopped before anyone can help.
