Angel in Hammajang Luck: Character Analysis

Overview of Angel Huang in Hammajang Luck

Angel Huang enters Hammajang Luck as the story's catalyst and its most morally complex figure. She is Edie Morikawa's former partner-in-crime and betrayer—the person who sent Edie to Kepler System Penitentiary for eight years. By the time the novel opens, Angel has reinvented herself as chief of security for Joyce Atlas, the quadrant's richest man, a position that places her inside the very empire she intends to destroy.

Angel's defining contradiction is that she is both the novel's architect of betrayal and its most devoted secret loyalist. Only late in the story does the reader learn that Angel's father was an AXON test subject who suffered disabling side effects, and that Angel has been working toward revenge ever since.

She is also the story's primary source of dramatic tension. Her past betrayal of Edie hangs over every interaction, and her refusal to explain herself—
