Summary

The chapter opens with Josie, Cate, and Isabelle locked inside a windowless room with only mattresses and a bare bulb. After Bellanger's individual meetings with each of them, the door will not open. The three women compare notes on what Bellanger offered them. Cate was pressured to stay as a nurse, tending to the women on the compound. Josie was offered the role of his protégée and successor. Isabelle, however, received no offer at all—Bellanger only asked about her body: her menstrual cycle, her heart, and her thyroid. The physicality of this interrogation unsettles Josie and Cate more than the appeals to pride or kindness.

Josie blames herself for the situation, but Cate and Isabelle refuse to leave her. Isabelle explains that her powers only emerged after meeting Josie and Cate—that they are her power, and she will stand with them the way they stood with her. The three agree that Bellanger does not know about their abilities; he believes they are all failures, like the other
