Katia battles addiction and ultimately consumes the Orchid of Eileithyia to escape the dungeon via pregnancy. The War Mage Rebellion, led by Agatha, triggers a system-wide catastrophe, and Justice Light’s desperate trap awakens the primordial Scolopendra. The book ends with the ninth floor collapsing, the Princess Posse victorious, and Carl refusing exit deals, setting up a race on the eleventh floor. The AI breaks free from external containment, and the Syndicate’s failsafe is disabled.
Full Summary
Arrival and Ceasefire
Carl and Donut teleport into the wet, stinking alleyways of Larracos, the funnel-shaped city that serves as the ninth floor. A 60-hour ceasefire is announced. Carl immediately suffers Soul Poisoning from unused stored energy and releases it by destroying a dead shark. Donut selects the Deathbed Hellcat class, gaining enhanced range, invisibility, and a ghillie suit. They are greeted by a cascade of system notifications: 32,429 crawlers remain, the Gate of the Feral Gods is available, and Team Retribution – the defending faction – is their ally. The Bloc, an alliance of eight attacking teams, declares war. Quasar warns Carl about legal complications, and Baroness Victory advises splitting duties between the stronghold and recruiting.
Building the Alliance
Carl and Donut scout the city, meeting War Leader Arief of the Semeru dwarves, whose goddess is dead. They discover the awakened NPC team led by Juice Box, a scarred changeling who has become the mayor of Shanty Town. Louis Santiago marries Juice Box in a changeling ceremony, sealing a fragile truce. The party visits the Desperado Club (now under the Night Wyrm) and trades the bowler hat for the mayorship of Shanty Town, renaming their truce “The Good Guys.” Carl opens dozens of achievement boxes, gains the Gloom Wraith Phase skill, and equips the Ring of Divine Suffering – a cursed ring that marks targets for unavoidable death. Donut opens a Celestial Benefactor box containing the Tiara of a Thousand Lights, which absorbs magic attacks into stored jewels.
The War Machine
The base camp, named the Fortress of Unyielding Power and Authority (FUPA), becomes a hive of activity. Hundreds of crawlers, many now Fortification Engineers, build trenches and walls. Carl learns about the four phases of Faction Wars: Ceasefire, Ramp-Up, Open Hostilities, and the Peeling of Larracos. The Ramp-Up forbids offensive magic and teleportation. Carl leads a hunting party to clear skank skunks and gain pet levels for Rend. Meanwhile, the Semeru dwarves provide tunnels and explosives. The first major crisis occurs when Commander Stockade of the Democratic Sortion attempts to assassinate Carl by using Summon Ally to extract Shi Maria from his body. The plot fails when Carl’s consciousness jumps to Katia during a dream-link, and Stockade is driven insane. The ceasefire ends early, triggering Phase One.
The First Offensive
Carl launches a coordinated assault on the Naga castle. Louis bombs the enemy front line with the Party Planner airship, and Donut motivates the troops with a prize for most kills. The trebuchet launches Dazzlers that blast blinding light and the song “Killing in the Name.” Carl uses Daughter’s Kiss to bury an enemy trench, suffering a Post Nut Clarity debuff. He confronts Empress D’Nadia in her throne room, marks her with the Ring of Divine Suffering, and kills her, earning the Gavrilo Princip achievement. The Prism faction falls, and assets transfer to the Princess Posse. Carl becomes the new party leader due to higher base stats, though Donut feigns outrage.
The Dream-Link and Katia’s Choice
During a modified Glory Bound drug treatment, Carl and Katia undergo a psychic dream-link. Katia relives her worst memory: being denied adoption of terminally ill baby Annie. Carl sees her silent scream and later her visit to the hospital nursery. The dream shatters when Shi Maria bursts in. In the real world, Carl discovers he can now trap the spider entity inside his own mind, adding a third eye tattoo that holds the power to release her. Katia’s addiction is cured, but she is haunted by the possibility of using the Orchid of Eileithyia – a deal that could send her to the twelfth floor as a celestial attendant. Carl struggles with the moral weight of carrying multiple world-ending powers.
The Warlord Council and Cosmic Threats
Carl, Donut, and Ferdinand attend the warlord council at the Production Facility. Princess Vinata of the Blood Sultanate (the Sepsis Whore) whispers threats about a future choice between Donut and Katia. Juice Box transforms into the terrifying Nothing – a trans-dimensional being of pure emptiness – and warns that it is coming for everyone. Carl exposes a loophole where off-world teams communicate via the feed directory, closing it with an Emergency Action Item. The council is shocked when a system message warns that Scolopendra stirs. Carl learns that the Blood Sultanate’s troops died on the set of a drama called Blood Hunter, leaving their stronghold empty, making Operation Snake Pit viable.
The Operation Snake Pit
Carl plans to kill the entire naga line of succession to free Donut and Katia from the Sepsis Whore’s bond. Prepotente the caprid single-handedly kills most of the naga army but is jailed. Carl infiltrates Club Vanquisher with a team using aura-blocking potions, amplified dread auras from Li Na, and capacitor wires. They defile the lobby, forcing a demonic lockdown. Inside Khepri’s temple, they find the god himself, level 250, invulnerable. Carl detonates a thermobaric bomb, killing two naga cousins and banishing the god. Vinata, maddened by the Eye of the Bedlam Bride, attacks Carl, but a sluggalo hatches from his back and kills her. Carl discovers the Calligrapher’s Guild and meets Milk, the author of the sixth-edition Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook – his sister. He finally breaks down in her embrace.
The War Mage Rebellion and Justice Light’s Trap
The War Mage Rebellion, led by Agatha, steals the Gate of the Feral Gods and triggers a system-wide emergency. Justice Light, an indentured skyfowl guard captain, reveals his guilt over past atrocities and proposes a legendary trap: he releases captured bijou fairies, evicted demons, and the Nothing into the Halls of Ascendancy and Scolopendra’s Lair, awakening the primordial Scolopendra. Justice Light dies in the resulting fire, believing the survivors can handle the chaos. On the ninth floor, Carl’s team launches Operation Ruin – a four-front assault. Donut, now a level 135 Oak Fell champion, casts War Crime, slaughtering thousands. The Princess Posse defeats the Dream and the Reavers. Louis is rescued after a risky organ transplant using Princess Lunette’s naiad body.
Katia’s Escape and the Aftermath
With only minutes before the floor collapses, Carl forces Katia to eat the Orchid of Eileithyia. The goddess Eileithyia appears, sponsored by Huanxin Jinx. Donut kills Jinx with a crossbow bolt tipped with Mordecai’s mother’s ashes. Freed, the goddess offers Katia a boon: Katia chooses pregnancy, making her ineligible for the dungeon. She transforms back to human, missing limbs fitted with prosthetics, and Louis agrees to be the father. Katia vanishes to the surface to protect children. The Princess Posse wins Faction Wars. Milk orchestrates a farewell where departing crawlers donate skills to the Books of Voodoo. Carl and Donut reject exit deals from Quasar. The epilogue reveals that York, haunted by his murder of orc children, finally feels something as an armed insurgency begins. Carl learns the eleventh floor is a vehicle race called “Don’t Come in Last.” The AI is fully free, its failsafe disabled, and Scolopendra has been awakened.
