Summary

In this pivotal chapter, Brittney's world is turned upside down, forcing her to confront the manipulative forces in her life and make a crucial decision about her future.

The chapter opens with Brittney at the Timmins airport, having booked a flight home in a fit of despair. She is convinced that Jayden has betrayed her by secretly working with Kevin and her mother. She reflects on her life, feeling stepped on and resigned to returning to her mother's control, believing that at least she knows what to expect.

Jayden, however, appears at the airport, having guessed her plan. He confronts her and explains his secret phone calls. He reveals that he has been working on a separate documentary project about Grace Odlin, hoping to pitch it for his senior year. He admits he kept it from Brittney because he knew she would see it as a bias issue. More importantly, he reveals that it was Kevin, not himself, who contacted Brittney's mother. Jayden had actually stopped Kevin from interviewing her, even making a light HR threat to ensure he wouldn't go behind their backs.

Brittney is stunned. She realizes that her mother, a notorious liar and manipulator, had twisted the story to make Jayden the villain and lure her back home. The realization is a gut punch, and she breaks down, apologizing to Jayden. She confesses that her mother is far worse than Grace, and that she has been financially and emotionally trapped by her.

Jayden offers her a choice: they can either give up and go home together, or they can continue to the mansion and pursue the truth. He has even bought a ticket on the same flight, ready to follow her decision. Brittney chooses to stay, declaring she won't let her mother pull and push her around like a pawn.

Their resolve is immediately tested when both their phones buzz with an email from their mysterious contact, confirming a meeting after their interview.

The next day, they take Grace's boat to the mansion. The experience is highly curated, with a comprehensive website, a special login for guests, and a detailed check-in process. Grace herself is charming and welcoming, but Brittney is unnerved by her. During the tour, Grace glosses over the mansion's darker history, reducing Liza McClaine's death to a
