Summary

The prologue opens with Spensa floating in the nowhere, a vast void outside of space and time. She feels an unexpected sense of belonging there, despite being a creature of flesh and blood. She explains that she has merged with Chet, a delver, and together they have become a weapon—a being capable of harming the delvers, the terrifying entities that threaten her reality. However, she still doesn't understand how this weapon works. The delvers are afraid of her, so they hide by turning their attention inward, making them invisible to her perception. Chet explains that because they have no bodies, they can only be seen when they are looking outward, much like light only becomes visible when it interacts with the eye.

Spensa tries to learn how to fight them, but Chet admits he doesn't know either. She worries about a deeper issue with their fear that she can't yet articulate. She then searches for M-Bot, her sentient ship and friend, but finds no trace of him. Chet assures her that M-Bot survived somehow, but she has been unable to locate him despite daily searches.

Experimenting with her cytonic powers, Spensa discovers two significant changes from her melding with Chet. First, the border between somewhere and nowhere is now flimsy in her vicinity. Second, she can enter minds and sense emotions more easily. In the nowhere, time is meaningless, but each person who enters leaves an imprint—a residual trace of their experiences. She begins to see these unintentional imprints left by her friends as they hyperjump in and out of the nowhere. These glimpses allow her to witness what they went through while she was gone.

She sees their panic when she vanished to go to Starsight. She sees them befriend Alanik, a purple-skinned alien who crashed on Detritus, and eventually help rescue Alanik's world from the Superiority, bringing a planet's worth of people to their cause. She witnesses the National Assembly's attempt to make a deal with the enemy, only to be betrayed by Winzik, who turns the summit into a trap and kills most of their leaders. She sees Gran-Gran and Cobb vanish into the nowhere to protect themselves, only to become trapped there. Finally, she sees the kitsen—small, foxlike aliens—whose planet is endangered, and how Skyward Flight works to forge an alliance with them. She observes Jorgen reluctantly taking up leadership of the entire military, using his powers to rescue Gran-Gran, Cobb, and the kitsen cytonics who had been imprisoned for centuries.

These glimpses fill in the gaps of her absence, but they also leave her feeling sorrowful. She regrets not being there to help, and she feels like an observer to her friends' lives and accomplishments. Chet tries to comfort her, reminding her that what she was doing was important, but she still feels the weight of missing those moments.

She leaves the nowhere and returns to her bunk on Detritus. She still faces the central problem: she doesn't know how to use her new powers to defeat the delvers. She feels ignorant and unsure of what she's doing. Chet vibrates her soul in a comforting way. She climbs out of bed and prepares for the day, which she expects to be a big one. She looks in the mirror and sees a reflection that is anything but imposing—frizzy hair, bags under her eyes, and something haunted and dangerous in her eyes that she doesn't understand. She sighs and takes out her dress uniform.

Character Development

This prologue focuses almost entirely on Spensa's internal state. She is caught between two identities: the girl from Detritus and the merged being with Chet. She feels at home in the nowhere, which is strange for a creature of flesh and blood, but she also acknowledges that she is
