Death at Morning House opens with Marlowe Wexler, a high school student in upper New York State, recalling her first meeting with Akilah Jones in freshman French. Over several shared classes, Marlowe developed feelings for Akilah. That summer, both worked at Guffy's ice cream shop, where Akilah mentioned that her favorite smell is petrichor—the scent of rain on dry earth. Marlowe, who was caring for family friends Juan and Carlita's lakeside cottage on Lake Oneida, used a Cheesecake Factory gift card to ask Akilah on a date. At dinner, Akilah gave Marlowe a lipstick.
