Summary

On Clifford Island, two elderly widows, Esther and Gloria, have performed the same daily ritual for twenty-five years. Every afternoon at exactly 1:12 p.m., they shuffle down their driveways to their mailboxes—Esther in her blue slippers, gray pants, and red cardigan, Gloria in her faded white nightgown—and wave to each other across the gravel road. They check their mail, even when there is none, and then return to their homes.
