The chapter opens with Prem jolting awake when his mother dumps a bucket of ice-cold water on him. He is still on the couch, surrounded by empty pizza boxes, beer cans, and the general wreckage of his weekend. His mother, dressed neatly in tan slacks and a cream blouse, stands over him with the mop bucket in hand, clearly unimpressed. She scolds him for living like this and orders him to shower while she makes breakfast. Prem, still hungover and bruised from the engagement party, complies.

After showering, Prem finds that his mother has transformed his condo. The trash is gone, the rug is vacuumed, and the washer is running. She is already kneading dough for aloo paranthas, having brought her own jar of pickled mango achar through airport security. Prem asks how she found out about the engagement party. She explains that she traced the news through a chain of connections—starting with Namrita Aunty's brother-in-law's cousin in New Jersey, then a Hindi teacher who taught the children of Falguni Kaushal, one of Kareena's aunties. Falguni filled her in on everything, including Kareena's desire for a love marriage. Prem's mother tells him plainly that he deserved being punched.
