Chapter 48: The Regional – Summary & Analysis

Summary

After washing away tear gas, Thurwar relaxes in her room at the Regional hotel. She follows her ritual of watching old fight footage—first studying her upcoming opponents alongside Staxxx, then reviewing her own match against Unicorn Racine. Watching herself on the archived stream, Thurwar feels a deep disconnect from the person she once was, a fighter who limped less because glory numbed her pain. She whispers “I love you” to that memory, but the words feel hollow. Her mind drifts to her former cellmate, Doc Patty, a gentle woman who once taught science and offered emotional support. In their cell, Doc Patty revealed her scarred “cutting leg” and urged Thurwar to stop hating her past selves—to love through all the people she has been. Thurwar recalls her own time in the Hole after being Influenced, the terror and hopelessness that followed. From the terminal, she reads a batch of fan messages: adoring letters, a veiled note from Sunset’s daughter, hateful bigotry, and crude propositions. She tries to let the toxicity roll off her, logs out, and uses Battle Points to upgrade Rico Muerte’s weapon and meal plan. Rico comes to thank her tearfully. Later, Staxxx knocks; after a brief joke, Thurwar lets her in, and they share the bed.
