Dunk, a young hedge knight, buries his master Ser Arlan of Pennytree and inherits his horse, armor, and sword. Determined to enter the tourney at Ashford Meadow, he stops at an inn where a drunken lordling speaks of a dream about him. A bald stableboy follows Dunk and offers his services. Unable to afford a pavilion, Dunk camps under an elm and orders armor from Steely Pate. The stableboy—who calls himself Egg—builds a fire, washes clothes, and cooks a fish. Dunk accepts Egg as his squire and renames himself Ser Duncan the Tall. At Ashford, Dunk competes and eventually earns the respect of Prince Baelor Targaryen. The Sworn Sword
