Summary

Ithan Holstrom stands over the shattered ice that was the Under-King, feeling hollow. Jesiba remarks that the House of Flame and Shadow will need a new Head, and Hypaxia is horrified to realize that the small power she put behind her blow has now made her, by the laws of inheritance, the new Head. Hypaxia heals Ithan’s wounds and her own, then Jesiba presses them to act quickly before Rigelus learns what has happened. Jesiba argues they must decide the fate of the souls in the bone quarter. Ithan wants to release them, as death functioned without the Quiet Realms before the Asteri.

Connor, Ithan’s brother, appears as a ghost and signals toward the black bullet in Ithan’s fist. Hypaxia orders him to speak, and Connor finally speaks with his own voice again.
