Summary

Thistleburr Books sits empty and silent after the blockbuster sale. Fern laments that the town’s reading appetite is now thoroughly sated, and with an overdue shipment still days away, the shop feels like a tomb. Viv, fidgety and itching for action—she has been daydreaming over bounty board postings—proposes they use the downtime to freshen up the store: fix the cracked lamp, repaint, replace the malodorous rug. Fern resists, fearing it will waste their profits without changing her fortunes, but eventually agrees.

Viv retrieves a new lamp chimney while she, Fern, and Maylee scour a gnome brothers’ used-furniture lot for a carpet, chairs, a table, vases, a painting, and whimsical gull bookends. After buying pots of white paint, they dine together and then tumble into a nearly empty tavern. Drinks loosen tongues; Fern tells a raucous Gatewarden story, and Viv and Maylee share quiet affection. The evening cements camaraderie and nudges Fern from resignation toward cautious excitement about the shop’s new face.
