Summary

Kingsley, still in his transformed frog-like body, hops through Trystan’s office, seeking the only patch of sunlight on the floor. As he basks in the warmth, he reflects on what he misses most about being human—the feel of the sun—and the gilded ring he once wore as a prince, now perched on his head as a tiny crown. Trystan bursts in, breathless and drained, dark circles under his eyes so pronounced Kingsley mentally names them Evie and Sage. Trystan is unsettled by how Kingsley acted during their earlier meeting and demands to know what happened. Kingsley shrugs off the concern, scrawling the word Boring on his slate. When Trystan presses further, asking directly what occurred, Kingsley hesitates between two words: HOP or HYPOCRITE. He abandons that thought and instead writes Friend. Trystan’s worry softens into a quiet understanding, and he leaves, promising to be available. Alone again, Kingsley lies on the sun-warmed stones and admits to himself that what happened in the meeting has happened before—and that he will keep this secret from his oldest friend.
