Chapter Summary of Onyx Storm

Prologue

The story begins with a sense of urgency and secrecy, as the protagonist hurries through tunnels to follow Xaden, who is hiding in the darkness. The protagonist is fearful for Xaden's safety, as he has been acting strangely and is at risk of being discovered and potentially executed. As the protagonist navigates the tunnels, they reflect on recent events, including the battle that cost General Sorrengail's life and the sacrifice Xaden made to save others. The protagonist eventually reaches the interrogation chamber, where they overhear a conversation between Xaden and Jack, a prisoner who knows Xaden's secret and is trying to manipulate him. The protagonist realizes that Jack poses a threat to Xaden's safety and decides to take action to protect him. With the help of Andarna, the protagonist forms a plan to find a cure for Xaden's condition, which may involve breaking laws and seeking out forbidden knowledge. The protagonist is determined to save Xaden, even if it means putting themselves at risk, and is willing to keep secrets and trust only a select few in order to achieve their goal.

Chapter One

The story continues two weeks after the previous events, with Violet Sorrengail flying through a treacherous storm on her dragon, Tairn. They are on a patrol mission to hunt down dark wielders, but the harsh weather conditions make it difficult to see or communicate with their squadmates. After a close call with another dragon, Aotrom, they return to the flight field and debrief with their team. Violet then meets with Imogen, who has been keeping an eye on Xaden, and they discuss their plan to find a cure for his condition. Imogen warns Violet that Garrick, Bodhi, and she have been discussing Violet's safety and think she should reconsider her living arrangements due to Xaden's unpredictable behavior. Violet refuses, insisting that Xaden would never hurt her. Later, Violet visits her squadmate Sawyer in the infirmary, where they chat about their patrol and the possibility of being sent on a mission to find the seventh breed of dragons. However, their conversation is interrupted by a terrifying scream, and a cadet stumbles in, revealing that there has been a deadly attack - multiple people are dead, and the killer is a venin, a dark wielder, who has managed to infiltrate the war college.

Chapter Two

Violet and her friends respond to a deadly attack by dark wielders, known as venin, who have infiltrated the war college. The venin are disguised as scribes and are attempting to rescue a prisoner named Jack. Violet and her team fight off the attackers, and Xaden appears, using his powers to take down the remaining venin. After the battle, Violet and Xaden share a moment together, discussing their feelings and the changes that Xaden has undergone. Xaden reveals that he can sense the presence of other venin, and that he has been using this ability to hunt them down. This newfound connection to the venin has left Violet feeling uneasy, and Xaden's admission that he is now "one of them" raises questions about his identity and loyalties. Despite this, Violet affirms her love and trust for Xaden, and the two share a intense moment, but Xaden's self-control prevents him from acting on his feelings.

Chapter Three

Violet attends a meeting with the Senarium, a council of high-ranking aristocrats, where they inform her that she will be assigned to a task force led by Captain Grady to find and recruit the seventh dragon breed. However, the meeting does not go as planned, and Violet's demands, which are actually Andarna's, are not met. After the meeting, Violet returns to her room, where she finds Xaden asleep. They share a passionate and intimate moment, but it is interrupted when Xaden suddenly stops and informs Violet that he needs space. It is revealed that Xaden's transformation has made him unpredictable, and he is struggling to control his powers. Despite this, Violet is determined to be with him and suggests that they can work through their issues together. The chapter ends with Violet discovering that Xaden may have accidentally channeled his powers, leaving marks on the headboard, and she begins to realize the extent of the challenges they will face in their relationship.

Chapter Four

The chapter begins with Violet and Xaden discussing the aftermath of their intimate moment, where Xaden lost control and channeled his powers, marking the headboard. Xaden is struggling to come to terms with his newfound abilities and the risk they pose to Violet's safety. The scene is interrupted by a group of friends and allies, including Brennan, Garrick, Lewellen, Bodhi, and Imogen, who have gathered to discuss the ongoing negotiations with Poromiel. Mira arrives with news and a conduit that will help Violet control her signet, as well as a practice disk that Trissa created, which has the potential to nullify a rune without destroying it. The group discusses the plans to send Violet on a mission to find the seventh dragon breed, which Andarna believes may hold the key to defeating the venin. However, Mira is fiercely opposed to the idea, citing the risks and the potential consequences of using Violet as a "gaming chip" to secure an alliance. The argument escalates, with Mira revealing that she has found a way to keep the fliers safe at Basgiath, and implying that this could be an alternative to sending Violet on the dangerous mission. The chapter ends with Brennan considering Mira's proposal and the potential implications of using it to forge an alliance with Poromiel.

Chapter Five

Tensions rise as a challenge is issued in the courtyard, with Aura Beinhaven, a Navarrian wingleader, holding a dagger to the throat of a flier and demanding that the Aretians choose a champion to fight her. The situation escalates, with both sides drawing weapons and the threat of violence hanging in the air. Dain, the former wingleader of Fourth Wing, attempts to defuse the situation, but Aura's hostility and the Navarrians' aggression make it difficult. Just as it seems that the situation will boil over into violence, Violet steps forward, using her skills to pin Aura's glove to the dais and prevent her from wielding fire. Violet then offers to take Dain's place in the challenge, setting the stage for a potentially explosive confrontation with Aura.

Chapter Six

Tensions between the Aretian and Navarrian riders reach a boiling point as Aura Beinhaven, a Navarrian wingleader, challenges the Aretians and demands they choose a champion to fight her. Violet steps forward, using her skills to defuse the situation and delivering a passionate speech that highlights the need for their generations to work together and put aside their differences to fight against their common enemy. The professors intervene, announcing that the riders will be participating in a Battle Brief the next morning and that the nobles are still negotiating a treaty. Later, Violet meets with her friends and allies, who reveal that her brother Halden has arrived and will be joining her on a mission, much to her dismay. The group also discusses the failed alliance between Navarre and Poromiel, with the Senarium voting against it due to concerns over the safety of Navarre's borders. Xaden reveals that he has been given back his title and seat in the Senarium, as well as the province of Tyrrendor, but seems unhappy about it. Before leaving on a mission, Xaden asks Violet to promise to intervene if he loses control, and she agrees. With Xaden gone, Violet is left to contemplate her next move, considering the potential consequences of her actions and the need to find a cure for Xaden's condition.

Chapter Seven

Violet and her friends execute a clandestine plan to alter the wardstone, allowing fliers to wield magic alongside riders. They gather in the Healer Quadrant, then make their way to the wardstone chamber, avoiding guards and using their unique skills to overcome obstacles. Mira, Brennan, and Sawyer play crucial roles in the process, with Maren's unexpected ability to wield magic proving pivotal. Despite initial setbacks and risks, they successfully modify the wardstone, enabling fliers to wield magic. The next morning, Violet and her squad attend a Battle Brief, where they learn about the renewed negotiations for an alliance between Navarre and Aretia. However, the meeting is disrupted by Colonel Aetos, who accuses Violet of high treason against the kingdom of Navarre, setting the stage for a dramatic and potentially perilous confrontation.

Chapter Eight

Violet is arrested for treason by Colonel Aetos, who accuses her of altering the wardstone to allow fliers to wield magic. However, she reveals that she acted to facilitate an alliance between Navarre and Aretia, and that her actions have already been pardoned by the king. The Senarium is unable to take action against her, and Queen Maraya arrives, praising Violet's actions and offering her access to her own library in search of historical records to defeat the venin. Violet escapes the great hall before King Tauri or Halden can appear, but is confronted by Aetos, who threatens her and her friends. Brennan intervenes, and Aetos reveals that he has been appointed as the new commanding general of Basgiath, and orders Violet's squad to serve on the front lines at the outpost of Samara as punishment for her disobedience.

Chapter Nine

The chapter begins with Violet and her squad arriving at the outpost of Samara, exhausted and weary from their journey. They meet with Lieutenant Colonel Degrensi, who is overwhelmed with the situation at hand, as the outpost is still reeling from a recent attack by wyverns and venin. Degrensi informs them that the fighting has ended, but the casualties are severe, and the front line is just over the hill. He tells them to get some rest and make themselves useful, but warns them that not everyone is friendly, especially among the riders, due to the potential alliance between Navarre and Aretia not being popular. Violet and her squad find a safe room, warded by Xaden, where they can rest. However, Violet is soon awakened by a nightmare, in which she is trying to find a painting of her family, but it's burning, and she's forced to leave it behind. After the nightmare, the squad discusses their plans, and they learn that the village of Newhall, where Maren's family fled, is under attack by venin. Despite the risks, the squad decides to fly to Newhall to extract Maren's family and save as many civilians as they can. They vote on the mission, and everyone agrees to go, with Rhi reluctantly accepting the decision. The squad prepares to embark on their perilous mission, determined to make themselves useful and save those in danger.

Chapter Ten

Violet and Tairn fly to the village of Newhall to rescue Maren's family from a venin attack. As they approach the village, they are met with a group of wyverns and a dark wielder who reveals herself to be Theophanie, a powerful Sage or Maven. Theophanie is surprised that Violet was so easily lured from her wards and reveals that she killed Maren's parents to lure Violet into a trap. Violet engages in a fierce battle with the wyverns, using her magic and Tairn's power to take them down. However, they are soon caught in a tornado, which separates them from the others and leaves them vulnerable to Theophanie's attack. Garrick, who has been following Violet, arrives on the scene and helps her to escape the tornado's aftermath. Theophanie reveals that she has been searching for Violet and is curious about her powers, particularly her ability to wield lightning. She offers to spare Garrick's life in exchange for Violet answering a question, which is whether the dragon or the irid chose her first. Violet agrees to answer, but the outcome is left uncertain as Theophanie's true intentions and abilities remain unknown.

Chapter Eleven

Violet and her squad face the aftermath of their mission to rescue Maren's family, with Violet suffering from a wounded knee. They return to the war college, where they are met with the hostility of Colonel Aetos, who is determined to punish them for disobeying orders. Xaden, now a member of the Senarium, intervenes and uses his authority to protect the squad, particularly Maren's brothers, who are now Tyrrish citizens. Aetos orders Xaden and Garrick to leave the war college and join the Eastern Wing, which will separate Xaden from Violet. As the others leave, Xaden confronts Violet about her actions, but instead of anger, he expresses his passion and concern for her, and they share a intense moment. Theophanie, the dark wielder, had earlier revealed that she is searching for Andarna, an irid scorpiontail, and Violet realizes that Andarna's existence is crucial to the balance of magic. The chapter ends with Violet and Xaden's relationship becoming more complicated, as they face the challenges of their duties and the secrets they keep from each other.

Chapter Twelve

Violet and Xaden share a passionate and intimate moment, but their conversation is laced with tension and uncertainty as they navigate the challenges of Xaden's condition and their duties. Xaden reveals that he has been struggling to control his powers and is afraid of losing himself in his desire to protect Violet. Violet reassures him that she will find a cure and that they will figure it out together. Meanwhile, Violet receives a letter from Xaden, who is recovering from a near burnout after a battle, and she realizes that he has lost control of his powers again. She decides to visit Jack, a prisoner who has information about the venin, and makes a deal with him to exchange information for a medallion that will keep him alive for another week. During their conversation, Jack reveals that the venin can sense each other and that they do not have to be taught to channel magic if they are already experienced with it. He also implies that there may be traitors among the dragon riders and fliers, and Violet begins to suspect that some of her own allies may be hiding secrets.

Chapter Thirteen

Violet and her friends visit Jesinia, a scribe who has been removed from the adept program, in the Archives to discuss their research on the irids. Jesinia shares her findings and provides them with six tomes to read, which cover the southernmost isle of Deverelli. Later, in Battle Brief, Professor Devera announces that the cadets will be adding three new classes to their schedule, including a history class and rune intensives, to prepare them for combat against the venin. She also reveals that high-level venin can wield signets, making them equally matched to the cadets on the field. The class is then introduced to their new instructor, Professor Riorson, who is none other than Xaden, Violet's love interest. However, Violet realizes that their relationship may be over due to Article Eight, Section One of the Basgiath Code of Conduct, which likely prohibits romantic relationships between professors and students.

Chapter Fourteen

Violet and Xaden face challenges as he becomes a professor at the war college, and their relationship is put to the test due to the Code of Conduct. Violet seeks help from Dain to retrieve research left by her father, which is hidden in General Aetos's quarters. Meanwhile, a meeting is held to discuss the mission to find the seventh dragon breed, and Xaden's presence causes tension among the team members. The team is tasked with searching for the breed along the northward coastline, but Violet and Xaden believe that searching the isle kingdoms, particularly Deverelli, may yield more information. Despite their reservations, the team is ordered to prepare for the northern search. As the meeting adjourns, Aura is assigned to escort Violet, adding to the tension and restrictions on Violet and Xaden's interactions.

Chapter Fifteen

Violet and her squad attend their first session of Signet Sparring, a class taught by Xaden, who has become a professor at the war college. The class takes place in a specially designed amphitheater with a weather ward and a protected mat area where students can wield their signets without risking harm to themselves or others. Xaden demonstrates his exceptional skills by easily defeating several students, including Loran, Caroline, and Neve, using his mastery of shadows to outmaneuver and disarm them. He explains that his goal as their teacher is to help them learn from each other and expose the weaknesses in their signets, so they can better defend themselves against dark wielders. As the class progresses, Xaden's relationships with the students are revealed, including his closeness to Violet, which is evident to everyone. The chapter ends with Violet stepping forward to spar with Xaden, determined to give him a challenge and prove herself.

Chapter Sixteen

Violet participates in a Signet Sparring class taught by Xaden, where she is tasked with tracking him down in a darkened arena. As they engage in a physical and emotional confrontation, Xaden pushes Violet to use her connection to him to find him in the darkness. The session ends with Violet unleashing a powerful lightning strike, and Xaden departing, leaving her with more questions about their relationship and his intentions. Later, Violet meets with her friends at a pub in Chantara, where they discuss their concerns about their signets and the pressures of being cadets. Dain approaches Violet and offers to retrieve her father's research from his father's quarters, but only if she trusts him to do it alone, putting Violet in a difficult position where she must decide whether to trust her former ally.

Chapter Seventeen

Violet attends a formation in the courtyard where the death roll is read, honoring those who have lost their lives in service. She then meets with Sloane, who gives her a package containing her father's research, which is locked with a six-letter mechanism that requires a password to open. Violet and her squad later participate in a Signet Sparring class, where they face off against Garrick, a powerful wind wielder. Violet uses her connection to Xaden to find him in the darkness and ultimately defeats Garrick with a precise lightning strike. However, their victory is short-lived as Prince Halden arrives, and Violet is forced to confront her complicated past with him. Halden reveals that he has been in contact with Viscount Tecarus, who has agreed to a meeting with King Courtlyn of Deverelli in exchange for the Amelian Citrine, a lesser-magic amplifier. Halden offers to help Violet retrieve the citrine in exchange for her agreement to dinner, but their conversation is cut short when Xaden intervenes, using his powers to blast Halden into the rock wall.

Chapter Eighteen

Violet and her friends deal with the aftermath of a confrontation between Xaden and Prince Halden, with Xaden's jealousy and possessiveness on full display. Meanwhile, Violet opens a locked book containing a letter from her father, which reveals a cryptic message about searching for a powerful artifact in Deverelli. The letter also warns her to trust only Mira and provides clues about her father's knowledge of the irids and the pursuit of feathertails. As Violet and Xaden navigate their complicated relationship, they begin to make plans to embark on a perilous journey to Deverelli, seeking answers about the irids and the artifact, while also facing the challenges of their duties and the secrets they keep from each other.

Chapter Nineteen

The story continues with Violet and her squad on a mission to retrieve the Amelian Citrine, a lesser-magic amplifier, from the village of Anca. They sneak past enemy lines and reach the village, where they begin to search for the citrine. However, things take a turn for the worse when Aura, a senior wingleader, accidentally sets a building on fire, and the flames quickly spread throughout the village. As they try to escape, Captain Grady is killed, and Aura is dragged away by a wyvern. Xaden uses his shadow powers to help Violet escape, and they are eventually rescued by Tairn, Violet's dragon. As they fly back to their base, Violet uses her lightning powers to take down another wyvern, and they finally return safely. Upon their return, Mira reveals that she retrieved the citrine, but it's damaged, and they also found a note from Theophanie, a powerful dark wielder, who seems to know more about Violet's goals than she should. The note hints that Theophanie may be aware of Violet's search for a cure or for Andarna's kind, leaving Violet and her friends with more questions and concerns about their mission and the secrets that surround them.

Chapter Twenty

Violet prepares for her progress briefing with the Senarium by reading numerous books on Deverelli and modifying her saddle. She attends the meeting with her requested attendees, including Ridoc, Mira, and Cat, as well as Cat's cousin, Drake Cordella. The Senarium presents their plan for the Deverelli mission, which Violet rejects, insisting on choosing her own squad. She names her preferred team members, including Xaden, Ridoc, Cat, and Halden, despite objections from Aetos and others. Xaden surprises everyone by announcing his intention to join the mission, citing his connection to Deverelli and his ability to reopen lines of communication. The meeting ends with Halden agreeing to Violet's squad, but not before Mira expresses her disapproval of Violet's choices and kneels Drake in the groin for his past actions. The team is set to depart for Deverelli the day after tomorrow, with Violet feeling a sense of determination and hope that they will find what they need, including a cure for Xaden and answers about her father's research.

Chapter Twenty-One

Violet and her squad arrive at Viscount Tecarus's palace, exhausted from their long flight. They are greeted by Tecarus, who is pleased to see them and offers them rest and hospitality. However, tensions rise as Halden, the prince, and Xaden, Violet's love interest, engage in a heated exchange, with Xaden asserting his authority and Halden growing increasingly agitated. Tecarus intervenes, suggesting that Halden travel to Deverelli by ship, while Violet and the others fly, in order to avoid any potential issues with Halden's royal status. As they prepare to part ways, Tecarus warns them about the dangers of King Courtlyn, who has a reputation for collecting rare and valuable items. Violet and her squad then set off towards Deverelli, but as they cross the ocean, they experience a sudden loss of magic, leaving them feeling small and vulnerable. The dragons, too, are affected, and Andarna begins to plummet towards the water, forcing Tairn to rescue her. As they fly on, Tairn reveals that their communications with the other dragons have been severed, leaving them cut off from Xaden and the others.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Violet and her squad arrive at Viscount Tecarus's estate in Deverelli, exhausted from their long flight. As they disembark, they notice the beautiful scenery and unique architecture of the island, but also sense that something is off. The group soon realizes that they are cut off from magic and their bonds with their dragons, except for Violet who can still communicate with Tairn and Andarna. Tecarus welcomes them and informs them that they can hunt for food in a nearby valley, but humans are off-limits. After the dragons depart to hunt, the group decides to rest before visiting the market to buy books. Xaden chooses to stay behind, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the lack of magic, which seems to have a calming effect on him. He and Violet share a tender moment before she heads off to rest, leaving him to soak in the view and enjoy the rare sense of peace.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Violet and her squad arrive in the capital city of Deverelli, navigating the crowded streets and marketplaces as they search for a rare book dealer. They eventually find the shop, Tomes and Tales, and enter to inquire about a person named Narelle. However, their presence sparks a violent reaction from some of the shop's patrons, who attack them with serrated daggers. Xaden intervenes, using his skills to disarm and subdue the attackers, and the group soon discovers that the shopkeeper is indeed Narelle, the person they were looking for. Narelle's mother appears, and it becomes clear that they are hiding something. Violet reveals that she is the daughter of Asher Sorrengail, and Narelle acknowledges that she has books written by him for Violet. The scene ends with Violet and her squad awaiting Narelle's next move, unsure of what secrets she may hold.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Violet and her squad visit a bookstore in Deverelli, where they meet the owner, Narelle, who has been entrusted with Asher Sorrengail's life's work. Narelle agrees to give Violet the books if she can answer three questions, which Violet successfully does, showcasing her intelligence and understanding of her father's research. The questions reveal that Deverelli had brokered a deal with Krovla to provide dragons, but when Krovla failed to deliver, the deal fell apart, leading to the Midnight Massacre. Narelle also inquires about Violet's past relationship with Prince Halden, which Violet explains was ended due to his infidelity. After answering the questions, Narelle hands over six passcode-locked tomes written by Asher Sorrengail. Later, Violet relaxes in a bathtub, and Xaden joins her, leading to a romantic and intimate moment between the two.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Violet and Xaden share a passionate and intimate moment, finally giving in to their desires after weeks of restraint. Without the influence of magic, they are able to be together physically without Xaden losing control of his powers. As they make love, they both express their deep emotional connection and commitment to each other. However, their romantic interlude is interrupted by their friends, who bring news that King Courtlyn has decided to keep Prince Halden, and Viscount Tecarus needs Xaden's presence. Xaden is reluctant to leave Violet, but ultimately agrees to go, acknowledging the importance of the situation. The chapter ends with Xaden and Violet facing the challenges of their duties and the secrets they keep from each other, while also navigating the complexities of their relationship.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Violet and Xaden arrive at the palace of King Courtlyn in Deverelli, seeking to negotiate the release of Prince Halden and secure permission for a search party to use Viscount Tecarus's manor. However, the meeting quickly turns sour as Halden reveals that he had been attempting to steal valuable items from the kingdom, and King Courtlyn serves the head of Halden's personal guard, Captain Anna Winshire, to his panthers. The situation escalates, with Halden accusing Courtlyn of theft and deception, and Xaden attempting to intervene by offering a deal with Tyrrendor. Violet refuses to let Xaden sacrifice anything else and takes matters into her own hands, setting the stage for a potentially deadly confrontation. The king ultimately orders the death of everyone present, except for Tecarus, leaving Violet and Xaden to fend for themselves in a hostile and deadly environment.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Violet and her companions find themselves in a perilous situation as they navigate the complexities of diplomacy with King Courtlyn of Deverelli. The meeting quickly escalates into chaos as the king's guards attack, and Xaden is forced to defend himself and Violet. In a shocking display of power, Xaden kills the guards without using magic, leaving everyone stunned. Violet takes charge, using her wit and cunning to negotiate with the king, who ultimately agrees to their terms. As part of the deal, Violet gifts the king with the shell of Andarna's dragon egg, a rare and valuable artifact. The king, in turn, agrees to an alliance and pardons Xaden for his actions. With the deal struck, Violet and her companions prepare to leave, but not before the king hints at another potential trade, leaving Violet intrigued and open to further negotiations.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Violet and her squad attend a Battle Brief session, where they discuss the latest developments in the war against the venin. The session is interrupted by a confrontation between Professor Carr and a second-year cadet, who is revealed to be a venin. Carr executes the cadet, sparking a mixture of shock and fear among the students. Meanwhile, Violet is concerned about Xaden's condition, as the amber flecks in his eyes have not returned to gold, indicating a potential worsening of his powers. She confides in Bodhi, who provides her with serum and antidote, and they discuss the possibility of taking drastic measures to cure Xaden. The squad decides to disobey direct orders and embark on a perilous journey to find the seventh dragon breed, skipping the required reporting and return trips to the Senarium. They plan to supply themselves and head to Unnbriel, with the goal of finding a cure for Xaden and uncovering the secrets of the irids.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

The story continues with Violet and her squad arriving on the isle of Unnbriel, where they plan to find the seventh dragon breed and potentially form an alliance with the island's queen. However, upon landing, they are met with an eerie silence from the jungle and soon realize that they are being watched. As they set up camp and assign watches, they are eventually confronted by a soldier from Unnbriel, who warns them that their magic will not help them on the island. Xaden responds by drawing a dagger to the soldier's throat, and Violet readies herself for a potential fight. The soldier's armor bears the emblem of two crossed swords over a horseshoe, and Violet notices the weak joints in his armor, preparing for a physical confrontation. The scene ends with Xaden and Violet poised for a fight, while the rest of the squad remains on high alert, surrounded by their dragons and gryphons.

Chapter Thirty

Violet and her squad, including Xaden, Aaric, Dain, and Cat, arrive at the capital city of Unnbriel, Eistol, after being greeted by a platoon of cavalry. They are met with hostility and are told that they will not be granted an audience with the queen unless they prove themselves worthy. Xaden proposes a challenge to earn their entrance to the court, and the captain agrees, warning them that only half of their group can accompany them. Violet selects Xaden, Aaric, Dain, and Cat to join her, leaving the others behind. As they enter the city, they are struck by its heavily fortified defenses, which seem to be designed to fight dragons. They are led through the city's alleys and streets, lined with leather-clad soldiers, and eventually arrive at a large temple. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Dunne, and its entrance is guarded by silver-wearing soldiers. The group is met with arguing guards, but the captain intervenes, and they are allowed to pass. As they enter the temple plaza, they are awestruck by the massive structure and the sculpted tribute to the goddess. The blue-robed attendants on the temple steps catch their attention, as every single one of them has striking silver hair.

Chapter Thirty-One

Violet and her squad arrive at the temple of Dunne in Unnbriel, seeking an audience with the queen. However, they are met with a challenge: Xaden must fight one of the temple's warriors to prove their worth. The warrior, Costa, is a massive and intimidating figure, and Xaden agrees to fight him without his signet. The priestess of the temple demands a payment in blood before the fight can begin, and Xaden offers his own arm to be cut. Dain also offers to fight alongside Xaden, and the priestess accepts, cutting his arm as well. As the fight is about to begin, the priestess reveals that Violet will also be fighting, having cut her forearm and drawn blood. The chapter ends with Violet, Xaden, and Dain preparing to face their opponents in the battle, which will test their strength, skill, and character.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Violet and her squad face off against the warriors of Unnbriel in a challenge to prove their worth and gain an audience with the queen. Violet is pitted against Marlis, a skilled and intimidating opponent, and the two engage in a fierce and intense battle. Despite being outmatched in terms of size and strength, Violet uses her agility and speed to her advantage, eventually gaining the upper hand and forcing Marlis to yield. However, the fight is not without its costs, as Dain is injured and Xaden is forced to fight for his life against his own opponent. In the end, Violet's squad emerges victorious, with two out of three wins, and they are granted an audience with the queen. Violet requests an alliance with Unnbriel, but the queen, Marlis, is hesitant, citing the lack of dragons on the isle and the high price of their assistance. Violet offers to pay any price, but Marlis reveals that what she truly desires is dragons, a request that Violet is unwilling to fulfill. The chapter ends with Marlis granting Violet's squad permission to take shelter in the jungles and hunt for food, but refusing to commit to an alliance.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Violet and her squad arrive in Hedotis, seeking wisdom and a potential cure for Xaden's condition. They are met by Faris, the second of the triumvirate, who welcomes them and offers to escort them through the city. However, the encounter takes an unexpected turn when Faris's wife, Talia, recognizes Xaden and addresses him as her son, leaving Violet and the others stunned. The revelation raises questions about Xaden's past and his connection to the people of Hedotis, and Violet finds herself feeling protective of Xaden as he navigates this surprising and potentially awkward situation.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Violet and Xaden are in Hedotis, staying in the home of Xaden's mother, Talia, who is married to one of the triumvirate. Talia tries to reach out to Xaden, but he is resistant due to her abandonment of him when he was a child. Violet tries to mediate and encourages Xaden to consider talking to his mother, but he is hesitant. Meanwhile, Violet and Mira discuss their plans and prepare for a potential confrontation with the triumvirate, who will be joining them for dinner. Violet decides to give Talia a gift of dried arinmint leaves, which holds sentimental value for Xaden, in an attempt to smooth things over. As the evening approaches, Violet and Xaden's relationship is put to the test as they navigate their complicated emotions and the challenges of dealing with Xaden's mother and the triumvirate.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Violet and her squad are invited to dinner with the triumvirate of Hedotis, where they are subjected to a series of questions and tests to assess their worth as potential allies. The conversation becomes tense as the triumvirate pushes for a contract marriage between Xaden and Cat, which Xaden firmly refuses, declaring his love for Violet. The atmosphere becomes increasingly hostile, with the triumvirate revealing their true intentions and biases. As the dinner progresses, Violet begins to suspect that something is amiss, particularly when she notices that the triumvirate doesn't have forks for their dessert, a rich chocolate cake. Her suspicions are confirmed when Garrick, who has already eaten some of the cake, collapses and stops breathing, prompting Xaden and Aaric to rush to his aid. It becomes clear that the cake has been poisoned, and Violet realizes that they have been played by the triumvirate, who have been manipulating them from the start.

Chapter Thirty-Six

Violet and her squad are poisoned by Faris, the second of the triumvirate of Hedotis, during a dinner meeting. Garrick ingests the poisoned cake and falls ill, prompting Xaden to perform CPR on him. Violet realizes that she had previously given the group an appetizer containing arinmint, which is toxic to the people of Hedotis, and uses this as leverage to try to get Faris to reveal the antidote. However, Faris refuses to cooperate, and Violet threatens to let him and his wife suffer the consequences of the poison. As the situation escalates, Mira takes charge of securing the house, and Violet searches for the cook to find out what was used to poison the cake. She discovers that the cook has blue stains under his nails and realizes that the poison might be related to the Errisbirds, which are known to have a toxic secretion. Violet's search for the antidote becomes more urgent as Garrick's condition worsens, and she eventually finds a clue that leads her to the cook, who reveals that he was instructed to add a poisonous ingredient to the cake. In the ensuing confrontation, Ridoc is stabbed by the cook, and Violet is forced to pin the cook's hand to the doorframe to prevent further harm.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Violet and her squad are on a mission to find the irids and form an alliance with the isle of Zehyllna. After a tense encounter with the triumvirate of Hedotis, they escape and fly to Zehyllna, where they are met with an unexpected welcome. The city's inhabitants wave and cheer as they pass over, and the squad is greeted by a large crowd at the city's main gate, which is also an amphitheater. The crowd is excited and cheering, but Violet is cautious, sensing that something is off. As they land and the crowd continues to cheer, Violet notices that the city's architecture is unique and defies logic, with buildings and structures added on top of each other. Tairn, her dragon, senses magic in the air, which is a surprise since they were told that Zehyllna has no magic. The squad is on high alert, unsure of what to expect from the crowd and the city's inhabitants.

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Violet and her squad arrive in Zehyllna, where they are met with a grand welcome and an unexpected challenge. The island's mistress, Calixta, explains that they must participate in a game to prove their worth and receive a gift from the god of luck, Zihnal. Each member of the squad draws a card, which determines their gift. The gifts are varied and sometimes bizarre, with some squad members receiving useful items and others being given strange or even harmful gifts. However, the game takes a dark turn when Trager draws a card and is immediately killed by an arrow to the heart. The chapter ends with the squad in shock and mourning the loss of their friend, leaving them to wonder what other challenges and dangers lie ahead.

Violet struggles to come to terms with the death of her year-mate and the weight of responsibility as the mission leader. Despite her grief, she must maintain her composure and make decisions to ensure the success of their mission. The squad decides to bury Trager and burn Sila's body on a remote island, away from the prying eyes of the Zehyllnans. As they prepare to leave, Violet confides in Xaden about her feelings of inadequacy and guilt over the loss of her comrades. Xaden offers words of encouragement, reminding her that she was chosen by Andarna and Tairn, and that she has the potential to become a great leader. The chapter ends with Violet and Xaden sharing a moment of intimacy, and Violet resolving to become a better leader and find a way to cure Xaden's condition, even if it means surpassing him.

Chapter Forty

Violet and her squad are on a mission to find the irids and form an alliance with the isle of Zehyllna. After a tragic loss, they hold a funeral for their fallen comrades, Trager and Sila, on a minor isle. As they prepare to leave, they notice that the map they have is incomplete, and they decide to split into groups to search the surrounding islands. Xaden and Garrick form one group, while Violet and Ridoc form another. As they search, they discover that they are not alone on the island, and they soon come face to face with a group of massive dragons, who are likely the irids they have been searching for. The dragons are enormous and powerful, and Violet is both awed and intimidated by their presence. The chapter ends with the dragons lowering their heads and Violet preparing for a potentially dangerous encounter.

Chapter Forty-One

Violet and her squad finally encounter the irids, a breed of dragons they have been searching for, and Andarna, Violet's irid companion, reunites with her family. However, the irids are not what they expected, and they soon realize that they are being tested. Andarna tells the story of how she bonded with Violet and their experiences together, but the irids are not impressed. They accuse Violet of using Andarna as a weapon and taking advantage of her vulnerability, and they declare that Violet has failed the test. The irids reveal that Andarna was left behind as a criterion to measure the growth and evolution of humans, but instead of finding progress, they see that humans are still using magic as a weapon. The irids criticize the way Violet and other humans have treated their dragons, gifting them with powerful signets and using them for warfare. The encounter ends with the irids dismissing Violet and her squad, leaving them feeling defeated and uncertain about their future.

Chapter Forty-Two

Violet and her squad's meeting with the irids ends in failure, as the irids refuse to help them achieve peace and believe that humans are beyond redemption. The irids dismiss Andarna, declaring that she is not a true irid, and Andarna is left feeling ashamed and rejected. Xaden, feeling guilty about being the reason for their failure, decides to put some space between himself and Violet. The squad returns to Basgiath, where they are met with the news that Queen Maraya is dead and Suniva has fallen to dark wielders. Violet also receives a ominous message from Theophanie, who seems to know her every move and is making arrangements for their next encounter. The group is shocked to learn about the fall of Suniva and the massive casualties that resulted from the attack. In a Battle Brief session, Professor Devera reveals that the venin used a unique tactic to take out the city, flying within a thunderstorm to avoid detection. Violet realizes that the lightning wielder, Theophanie, must have been the one to control the storm and start the fire that devastated the city. The group discusses possible strategies to defeat the venin and protect their valuable targets, with Rhiannon suggesting that Violet could be used as an asset to take out the enemy. Meanwhile, Sawyer struggles to come to terms with his new prosthetic leg and his inability to fly. Jesinia, a scribe, intercepts a mysterious package meant for Violet, which is revealed to be a soft, malleable item from a seamstress in Chantara. In a private meeting, Ridoc pushes Violet to reveal a secret, which she finally shares with her friends: Xaden is slowly turning into a venin.

Chapter Forty-Five

Violet experiences a terrifying nightmare about being attacked by a Sage, but wakes up to find it was just a dream. She then attends a training session with her squad, where they practice a new maneuver called a "battle-mount" that requires them to dismount and remount their dragons quickly. Violet struggles with the exercise, but eventually succeeds with Tairn's help. After the training, she gives Xaden a gift - a wrist cuff made from a piece of the Riorson House turret - and they share a romantic moment. However, Xaden's brooding continues, and he warns Violet that his condition is worsening. The scene ends with Felix arriving at Basgiath, bringing news that the wards are weakening and wyverns have breached them, making it increasingly urgent for Violet and Xaden to find a solution to their problems.

Xaden returns, and a heated discussion ensues between him, Halden, and Calldyr regarding the opening of Tyrrendor's borders to Poromish civilians. Xaden announces his decision to take in the civilians, despite Halden's opposition, and later reveals that Draithus has only weeks before it will be attacked. The scene takes a surprising turn when Lynx, a squad member, manifests shadows, indicating that he may be the new shadow wielder. Xaden helps Lynx control his newfound abilities and then prepares to leave, citing his responsibilities in Lewellen and the need to prioritize Tyrrendor's needs over his personal desires. Violet tries to convince him to stay, but he ultimately departs, leaving her feeling defeated and concerned about their future together. With Violet's help and encouragement, Sawyer successfully climbs onto Sliseag's back, overcoming his physical limitations. The squad celebrates Sawyer's achievement, and they soon prepare to leave for Aretia. As they arrive at the Riorson House, Violet is filled with a sense of longing for Xaden, who is not present. She visits their room, which remains unchanged since they left it, and finds a few personal items, including a glass box from Zehyllna and the emerald-hilted Blade of Aretia. Brennan, Violet's brother, arrives and reveals that he has been trying to help Xaden with his condition, but his attempts at mending have been unsuccessful. However, Xaden has not given up and wants to try mending the spot at Basgiath, giving Violet a glimmer of hope.

Chapter Forty-Eight

Violet is studying in her bedroom when Xaden arrives, soaked from flying in a storm. They share a passionate kiss, and Violet learns that Xaden has been struggling to control his powers, but has managed to keep them in check for 73 days. He reveals that he needs Violet to give him control, and she agrees, allowing him to take the lead in their intimate encounter. As they navigate their desires and boundaries, Xaden uses his shadow powers to restrain Violet, and she finds it disturbingly hot. Despite the risks, Violet chooses to be with Xaden, accepting whatever risks come with being with him, and they finally give in to their desires.

He eventually releases his control, and they both experience an intense and satisfying climax. Afterward, they relax in each other's arms, and Xaden reveals that he's stable for the moment, with no signs of his powers spiraling out of control. They share a romantic moment, and Xaden suggests a plan to spend the rest of the evening together, including a bath, and then exploring other parts of the room. Violet agrees, and they embark on a night of passion and intimacy, putting their worries and concerns aside.

In the dream, Violet is threatened by a Sage who demands she bring him something, and Xaden believes the dream is his, not hers. They discuss the possibility of sharing dreams due to their bond, and Xaden suggests that Violet's second signet, given to her by Andarna, allows her to walk into people's dreams. Andarna confirms this, revealing that Violet has been unknowingly walking into Xaden's dreams and possibly Maren's, making her an exceptionally dangerous person. To confirm this ability, Violet decides to test it by asking Maren about a portrait of her family, which Violet saw in one of her dreams. Maren confirms the portrait's existence, and Violet realizes she must have walked into Maren's dream. Just as they're about to discuss this further, the war college is alerted to an impending attack from the east, and Violet and Xaden must prepare to face the enemy.

Tairn, Violet's dragon, and Feirge, Rhi's dragon, work together to take down a pair of wyverns, and Violet uses her magic to help them. However, as the battle rages on, Violet becomes concerned about Xaden's safety and reaches out to him through their bond, only to be met with a cold, icy wall. She then spots four wyverns sneaking towards the city, intending to attack the temple of Dunne, and Tairn dives to intercept them. Violet gathers her power and unleashes a lightning strike, hitting the lead pair of wyverns and setting them ablaze. As Theophanie recovers, she gains the upper hand, pinning Violet to the ground and taunting her about her limitations as a lightning wielder.
